Powering Rural Communities

What We Know

  • At least a third of homes could face technical and financial challenges to installing a heat pump. 1
  • 69% of rural consumers said they would not be able to afford a heat pump and the required energy efficiency upgrades. 2
  • The Government recognises not all homes will be suitable for a heat pump.

Serving Rural Communities

The LPG market has a strong foundation in serving homes that are off the gas grid and the households that our industry serves are largely located in rural areas. Due to these buildings’ fabric and constraints around rural electricity networks, there is a risk that these properties will be left behind on the journey to Net Zero.

LPG currently powers 300,000 rural homes across the UK and has the potential to power the 1.4 million homes not connected to the gas grid. The industry is investing in a future for these communities that allows them to lower carbon emissions without costly or impractical upgrades to their homes.

BioLPG will provide up to 92% carbon saving compared to oil by 2040, and up to 90% compared to conventional LPG, and can be seamlessly used as a ‘drop-in’ fuel in existing supply chains and by consumers in their existing heating appliances, with little or no cost to the consumer

It is important that Government policy reflects the diversity of the UK housing stock and allows consumers to choose a decarbonisation pathway that is right for them and their circumstances.
